A trip to the country

Last week The Actor and I went to visit my Dad in Norfolk.  We had to hire a car as The Actor is learning how to do some fancy moves on a fixed gear bike for a role.  There was no way the bike was going in his 'Italian Job' Mini Cooper which can barely fit my handbag in.

I wasn't sure about the Vauxhall Insignia we hired with but it turned out to be a good car and you could have fitted a king sized bed in the back.  Perfect for me who likes to take everything.

As usual we were late getting out of London and the weather took a turn for the worse

Elvedon Woods, Suffolk.  Hmmm... A lovely bit of English weather.

We arrived about 7pm and hung out with my dad and his elder sister Penny.  It was very odd being there without my aunt Murry.  We talked about her a lot and I still expected to see her at any minute.

It's nice to wake up to the view of their garden and a much brighter day.

My dad moved to Norfolk from London fifteen years ago and Murry moved from Cambridge.  They loved it, they're into animals and gardens.  Murry always preferred animals to people.  Personally I would rather they'd been nearer as Norfolk seems so far away.

In all that time I've never really explored the area.  I think Penny and dad wanted to watch Wimbledon in peace so they convinced us to go for a walk on the beach.  The Actor being a mentalist decided he wanted to go swimming in the sea.  It wasn't exactly warm.

This is Holkham beach.  That teeny, tiny bit of blue in the far distance is the sea

It's about four hundred miles away from the road and the tide's gone out.  Marvellous.

I look like I've got dressed in the dark.  I had long boots on but changed into Fitflops when I got out of the car and realised how wet it was.  They're not exactly working with this outfit.  Everything I'm wearing came from Ebay - John Rocha poncho £1.70, a YSL pussy bow blouse which was £15, modal leggings £10 and a modal snood £20.

Where the sand dunes and the salt marsh meet the sea.  East Anglia's very flat and the beaches are quite desolate.

This poem is on a signpost nearby;

"Where the wings of the sea-wind slacken,
Green lawns to the landward thrive,
Fields brighten and pine-woods blacken,
And the heat in their heart is alive;
A land that is thirstier than ruin;
A sea that is hungrier than death;
Heaped hills that a tree never grew in;
Wide sands where the wave draws breath"

In the Salt Marshes
by Algernon Swinburne

The Actor got his kit off and ran straight into the sea

There's no way I was going in there so I took a few pictures of him running off starkers

That's him - the little black dot in the distance in the centre of the picture. He said it was quite "bracing" Yeah, whatever.  I'm still not going in.

You can go on a boat trip and see seals.  I'm so up for that.
I wish I could pat them too.

Especially if they have faces like this!

Holkham is a picture postcard English village owned by the Earl of Leicester.  Here's his family seat,  Holkham Hall.

The Actor decided he was hungry after his swim.  I was totally windswept but luckily I had hair and make-up in the car so after a quick spruce up we decided to find a restaurant.  What we really wanted was a seafood platter being near the coast.  You'd think that would be easy, wouldn't you?

The first place we came across in Holkham was The Victoria Hotel and restaurant which looked rather good.

We went in for a look

It was lovely but it didn't have a seafood platter and was empty on a Monday night, unsurprisingly for the middle of nowhere.  We headed a few miles along the road to Burnham Market.

I took this out of the car window.  You don't see these very often.

I love the Georgian architecture in the village

and pretty flint covered cottages

All done in Farrow and Ball by the looks of it

Burnham Market reminds me of the TV series Midsomer Murders, without the murders.

The Actor likes the look of this house

Then we spotted The Hoste Arms a 17th Century coaching Inn.  And it serves real ale so The Actor was happy.

Unbelievably it was completely packed out ON A MONDAY!  You'd be hard pressed to find that in London.

The car park was wall-to-wall Range Rovers.  I'd heard lots of people who have houses in Norfolk frequent the Hoste Arms - Stephen Fry, Anneka Rice and Amanda Holden - I think I read that in the Daily Mail.

The Hoste owns various places to stay in Burnham including this old railway carriage you can rent.

We still didn't find a traditional seafood platter and this sounded rather fancy but it's good to try lots of things.  Plus by that time we were starving and we'd already waited for a table.  They gave us a lovely table tucked away in the corner of the wood panelled restaurant.  There are five rooms you can eat in.  All were booked.

For two to share - "Potted Cromer crab with Irish soda bread, Brancaster oysters with white tomato granite, Letzer's locally smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill croute, Norfolk brown shrimp Caesar salad, chilled lobster milkshake with crayfish, caviar and chives" (a lot better than it sounds).  It was all excellent.

The Actor chose a bottle of South African red

We shared the "New York steak (enormous, we took a doggy bag home to dad's animals), twice cooked chips and beer battered onion rings, field mushrooms and grilled plum tomatoes with peppercorn sauce" and a side of asparagus.

I can definitely recommend the food here.

These are the stairs to the loo.  How jazzy is this?

Here's the ladies complete with chairs to sit on to do your make-up.  I wanted these Fired Earth tiles in my bathroom but the quote was eye watering.

They've even got them on the ceiling!  I had to take a picture of that.

Here's a little bit of our table, complete with a couple of sculptures.  We enjoyed our night at the Hoste.  I'm sure we'll go back next time we're there.

The next morning I tried to take pictures of birds and squirrels on dad's many feeders but they were too quick for me this time.

The Actor kindly strimmed the entire garden which took forever.  I was given the job of sweeping the bits up and removing them in a giant wheelbarrow.  Even that was hard work.  When he finished he said "That's it!  We are NEVER getting a big garden"  I don't know how dad does it.  It's all getting a bit much now so he's talking about downsizing.  That will be his next project.

There's Muntjac's (miniature deer) in them there woods.  Dad informed us we were up too late to see them but said they've had the heads off most of his flowers.

Apart from the snap dragons.  They must taste funny or something.  We used to do little plays with these as they look like faces with mouths.  Does anyone know what I'm talking about?  Or was that just me?

I'm slowly progressing with my reading.  To everyone on my blog list and my new commenters, I shall visit you very soon I promise.  It's hard catching up when you're so behind but I'll get there.

Have a wonderful day, I hope it's sunny again xxx

It does look so lovely in your father's garden - my mother lives on a farm in Scotland these days and the photos she sends me are similarly idyllic (the squirrels! the flowers! the salmon in the back stream!). She's a lot further than Norfolk to London though, since she moved to Scotland from Australia, so think yourself lucky!

Dear Christina, I'm not sure which one I'm most taken with, the Actor's bare bum or the seal's face!
That part of the world looks gorgeous. Other than Devon I'm pitifully ignorant when it comes to "Down South". The Hoste looks magnificent and the beaches are stunning.
I know exactly what you mean about snapdragons, my Grandpa used to tell us they got their name from having dragon faces that snapped when you pinched their jaws.
Love you. Vix xxx

Oh Yes! I used to do that with Snapdragons too. You snip the heads off and put your fingers in the back like a puppet and make them talk (for the uninitiated).

I think they are poisonous so the muntjac, sensibly, won't eat them. I could be wrong here. I'm not a horticulturalist (see above comment. Ha ha).

I too remember snapdragon conversations so much fun as a child. Youe dad's garden is beautiful. x

I loved the loo pics too .. I do love a nice loo when I am out and about .. also a glamorous one. Fired Earth tiles are fabulous but as you say far too expensive.
I hope you are ok. .. and that your dad is ok , it looks stunning where he is .. too far for me too although I have good friends in Beccles ..

Dear Christina,
England really is a stunning place, I sometimes forget that living in London. These pics make me want to go away this weekend, just pick up our recently acquired tent and scoot off into the wilderness for a few days ;)
Hope you are doing well my lovely!
BTW, top marks to the actor for liberating himself of cloth & running into (what I would expect to be rather chilly water) like a Greek God off to fight some mystical underwater beast, hehe.
Take care luv,
Jennie

Wow - epic photos of your stay. Says it all about the weather in that car dashboard pic - 13c. The boyfriend and I went looking for Norfolk beaches a few years ago and accidentally ended up on a firing range - the beach was miles from the road there as well.
Good on you for refusing the empty, bland restaurant and finding the Holke; a complete gem. And yes, the loos are gorgeous and totally lovely. I like to report on good loos but usually only cinemas and shopping centres; I don't think I get out enough at the moment;)
Are you secretly the Actor's publicist - showing us his bum, indeed! Work will be flying his way now...
Your dad's garden is amazing - why did I picture some out-of-control scruffy small-holding when you said he and Murry had animals??? Similar issue with my dad - garden too big now, but at least your dad is thinking of downsizing. A hard move, but its good he's being positive about it. I can't get my dad to accept getting any help in ("they won't do it right") so he's 79 and still getting up rickety stepladders to do the conifers. And he won't wait til I go there to help; he just does it then tells me afterwards....s'truth.
I'm rubbish with snapdragons - want loads, but never get round to buying them. x

What a beautiful garden, how lovely...the kind of garden you can only have if you live outside London LOL!! I hope that your Dad is coping okay.

I've never been to Norfolk but a couple of friends have cottages there and go all the time and LOVE it! I have heard of the pub you went to - isn't that the one where the guy who owned it died last year? The food looks and sounds fabulous....worth the risk of bumping into that horrible Amanda Holden ;)

Love the beach - and the cheeky bottom shot! The Actor is a very brave man....I laughed out loud at your "got dressed in the dark" comment LOL!!

We are off to Suffolk tomorrow on our annual camping weekend with friends....am just packing - and remembering how much I hate sleeping on an airbed and how the sun comes up ridiculously so early in the countryside, UGH!! I think my children were out of the tent at about 4.40am last year!!!! I come back exhausted! We go with loads of friends though so it is a lot of fun and the children absolutely love it, they ride around on bikes the whole time and are just freeeeee :) We'll go to Aldeburgh beach and have long lunches which is lovely.

Thought of you last weekend....I took the children to Hackney Empire and drove through roads that reminded me of your lovely home :)

Hope you are well :) xx

Oh Christina what a wonderful post. I used to do that thing with snap dragons and as I went to uni in Norwich and spent all my days on the beach at Holkham, Blakeny or Wells (nest the sea) I loved the photos. I've swum all year round in that bracing sea!

We used to have the most wild parties in the houses in Holkham. We even had one in the grounds of Holkhan hall once (not sure if was an illegal one or what!)

Hope your Dad is okay and it is nicer when they are nearer. When I moved back to London I made my parents do the same. They are near Marlow so not in it but can come and go as they please and easy for me to drive to them. Plus they downsized on the garden too!
xx

Blimey, hats off to the actor, skinny dipping in the North Sea is not for the faint hearted! Brr, no wonder he needed calories afterwards.

Norfolk is not an area I know, it looks beautiful, yes very Midsomer murders and your Dads garden looks lovely, fond childhood memories of playing with snapdragons as finger puppets.

Hope your well, lots of hugs.

Great post! I've been going on holiday to Norfolk (in Cley, Stiffkey and Wells) with my family since i was little so i really enjoyed this post! Shame we can't go this year :( Haha is does take ages to get to the sea at Holkham, but it's nice to set up camp in the sand dunes on a sunny day and go down to the water when you want to. Wells-next-the-sea's beach is gorgeous and sandy too and less of a trek through (or carefully dodging) mud to the water than Holkham, it's got some pretty beach huts too. And i love the Hoste Arms! (sorry this is such a gushy comment!) We always pop in there for a drink & i love how the toilets are always playing Elvis music (apparently it was the favourite of he owner who died last year) xxx

Beautiful pictures and that food looked delicious! Laughed at the Actor braving the sea and skinny-dipping. He definitely wouldn't be doing that in Blackpool, although we have golden sands, its still not as nice at the Norfolk beach. xx

Perfect, perfect, in all ways perfect from the bare Actor's butt (of course I would mention that first) to the fried onion rings and the jazzy bathroom and the gardens and the houses and the flowers and the rain and, and, and....
Oh Christina. Thank you for giving me eyes to see your part of the world. Thank you for your spirit and your joy.

Also, tell the Actor I said, "Nice kit." Laugh.

I love you so very much. I'm glad you two made it back to London safe and sound.

That's so strange.. I was in Burnham Market this weekend! I took a girlfriend up there and we shot some photos for the boutique on Holkham Beach on Sunday... bizarre coincidence. My Mum lives in the village so I go up fairly often.

Am so sorry to hear of your loss, I hope the trip wasn't too upsetting. Your Dad's garden is beautiful, by the way. And I know exactly what you mean about playing with snapdragons!

What is it about freezing water that makes a man take off his clothes and race into it? Very very cute. I love your descriptions of everything. It will be so difficult for your dad to move, it is so obvious how much the property is loved. I know all of this is very unsettling for you too. Thank God all of you have the Actor! xx's

Christina, reading this post was like going on a mini vacation!

You can't imagine how weird it is for me to see your photos of a beautiful beach, in the summer, with no one but you and the buck naked actor on it. Don't the local people like to go to the beach?

And your father's garden is just beautiful.

I love Norfolk. It's a bit early for Sampire, but you have to try it when it is ready. It's a local delicacy.
The food at the pub looked wonderful. Just what you need after baring your buns to the North Sea.

Oh, thank you so for the view of the countryside, ( and the view of the Actor, not bad either)! Yes, please go and pet seals and tell me what they feel like! I have always wanted to pet a seal!!
When I was a child, I spent hours hoping to hold a baby bird in my palm to see what it felt like. A few years ago, I had to rescue one, and got the sensation... It was amazing!
Baby Birds are so FIERCE! How something that weighed an ounce could have had me on pins and needles, I cannot say, but it is true!!
Happy Holiday!

Ah Christina, I know exactly how you feel. I'm so far behind on blog comments, emails etc that I'm wondering if I'll ever have the time to catch up. I did drop you a quick email about London though.
