Barbara Hutton with her miniature poodle, 1947
Mrs Jones and I went fabric shopping in Shepherds Bush last week. We took Betty, Fee's miniature poodle with us and bought her a present. I was about to blog some pictures I'd taken when I spotted the above book Café Society on the side. Barbara Hutton's poodle looks rather like Betty so next thing I went off on a tangent and started searching for poodle pictures. As usual I went completely over the top with the amount of pictures I've posted so please bear with me on the poodle overload.
I've never really been mad on small dogs and I've never really taken any notice of poodles before. When I met Betty she's such a character I fell in love with her. Every time time I see her she goes mental and starts doing somersaults and gets so over excited she can't even bark, she just croaks at me. Suddenly I've started noticing poodles all over the place in all colours and sizes.
Poodles are amazing looking dogs, we often give them ridiculous hair cuts which I think does them no favours as they're now perceived as a camp dog to own. Poodles have wonderful natures, they're very intelligent and make great companions. I like the fact they don't shed hair which is why Labradoodle's and Cockerpoo's are so popular. The Actor and I met a gorgeous Cockerpoo in the pub the other day.
Did you know that poodles were the most popular breed of dog of the 1950's? I didn't but I'm always interested to see all the kitsch poodle items Vix finds on her outings. It seems that poodles are making a comeback in popularity. Here's my selection of vintage and fashion poodle pictures, with a few randoms thrown in.

This broad-brimmed Balenciaga hat — photographed by Henry Clarke in 1954 — was described by Vogue as ‘highly individualised, proudly conspicuous, sophisticated as a poodle’. The miniature poodle was by now hugely popular in Britain — available in the new strains of apricot, cream and silver, as well as the traditional black, white and brown. This one, in black to match the model’s evening gloves and dress, wears a white bow in its topknot to match the hat’s cloud of swans down.

Poodle-tastic! That fine assortment of photos must have taken you ages to collect, Christina!
I love the old lady with the kaftan, you're right, she's so elegant and Betty is so cute. I'd love to own Peter but I don't think Jon would want to be seen in public with him.
They were definately the fashion accessory of the 'fifties, whenever I find a vintage magazine or a dressmaking pattern there's often one on the cover.
Love you! xxx
How fab, I'm a total dog lover. Betty is adorable - I wan a poodle cushion too! I don't think you see enough coloured poodles these days, the Doris Day pic is great! xxx
Hi there! What a fabby poodle post, gorgeous pictures and I must say I'm adoring Peter, he is just soo cute!!! Betty loves her little cushion too, my Candy would have torn it to ribbons unfortunately!! xxx
Oh my! I'd seriously underestimated the use of poodles as an accessory - what a fab cache of pics. I don't like them in real life - usually because you see elderly ones, with rheumy eyes (and matching owners) but as a kid in the 60s I had the most fabulous powder-blue pj case. It was a crinolined, stand-up number. Why did my mother never realise how much I was going to get into vintage???
ps pj case was in the form of a stuffed poodle, in case that sounded a bit off-subject!
Great photos. You really have an eye for compiling them for us!
WOW! I'd never have thought one could come up with such a huge and fashionable post on poodles! I'm a dog lover, but a poodle would not suit me at all, I'm not chic enough xD
Great post yet again Christina! x
Amazing pics though I have to say I have never met a good natured poodle, they are vicious little hoity toities!
Thanks everyone for your fabulous comments xx
Oh! Tabitha what a shame, so far I've only met really friendly ones. I did slightly fall in love with the Cockerpoo we met, but not enough to actually get one! xx
Fabulous! You know I have a poodle, FiFi, who looks quite like the dog in the 2nd photo. They are all "French Royalty" they think. And, mine has a lovely disposition, but she does love barking. xx's
I dig Betty! The photo of her with her new "baby" is so cute.
What a great collection of photos! My favorite is the Cary Grant one. I adore Cary and have the largest framed poster of him in my kitchen. Every morning, I have coffee with Cary. What a way to start the day! He was a good trade for coffee with my ex-husband, believe me.
Whenever I feel lost in life and despairing, I watch old Cary Grant films and immediately feel better about everything. Strange, huh?
Love you TONS,
SB
WOW!
What a great post!
My favourite pic is this with Amaryllis Fleming!
Salut!
Franka
I prefer big dogs too but Betty is a little cutie. Though I like the look of the clipped and coloured poodles I do feel sorry for the dogs, they must feel so undignified! Or perhaps because I am a cat person I am putting cat thinking into dogs heads, and they really don't mind at all xx
Betty is the only poodle I have ever really known that was sweet.. I am a little nervous of them.. fab photos xx
oh wow!! i didn't realise how much use one can have out of a poodle...!! This is a fantastic post, but I am NOT a poodle fan I am afraid.. I don't know why, maybe because the Parisian poodles are very happy and unpleasant...just like their Parisian owners I guess, ha! However, the Peter the poodle is are amazing, I absolutely love him! he looks like the Popples from the 1980s American cartoon!
xxx
Absolutely Fabulous your post!!!
Love the poodles...
My friend's dog Rigby is a poodle - I was always very scornful of them until I met him. Mind you, his coat is cut normally which I think helps. I loathe the clipped and trimmed ones despite their high kitsch value.
ps - I swooned rather at the Cary Grant photo.
I feel sorry for poodles for people have this stupid idea that they are "silly" dogs but ... they are very clever and tough for they are hunting dogs - a fact many people do not believe!
I think your post did Poodles proud :)
i also feel really sorry for all those poodles. they are not my fav. dogs in the world. the photos are very good though.
xox

I need a poodle as I just know it will make my hats and overall outfits simply spectacular;)). They are cute and crazy dogs, very curious and so incredibly clever. Thank you so much for sharing these gorgeous pics - utter gorgeousness. I think the most surprising one was of ole Winston C. I think I'm in love with Betty. I want her to come home with me! Hope you're feeling strong today lovely non-smoking woman:)). xoxoxox
Whilst i love poodles printed on clothes etc (can't beat a bit of kitsch!) i'm not really a dog person at all. But I do like all the pictures!
Christina!! I have a GIANT black poodle called Billie! My most important fashion accessory for years!! x
I knew a terrible man who fed baby poodles to his pet snake. Sad sad
Fab pictures but Peter the Poodle is just amazing!
great parade of poodles-I have off and on over the years considered a standard- they are super smart and regal-I don't see how with their lovely heritage how they get a bad rap.I agree about the lady in the caftan- love her hair and exactly what my friend and stylist are working toward with my own going grey fast as day hair color. little glimmers of hope like this I cherish. I have a poodle you missed-and will poddle it soon in a different sort of post soon. Gaye
Well, they are such an elegant breed that I'm not surprised. When my daughter is older we're thinking of getting a maltese poodle for her. They are super adorable and cuddly.
The weird thing about Poodles is that you never see them around now, but there tons of them in the 60's when I was a kid. I would't mind a pink one!
My dear Christina that was SO MUCH FUN !!! I LOVE dark chocolate brown standard poodles in particular ( also weimaraners called fay !!) and Lady Diana cooper and cary grants ones are fabulous grazie tanti fay xxx
Made me smile - not a poodle but did you see Brit Ekland page 9 in todays Sunday Times mag? Mad me smile too. Hope you are well sweetheart. Xxxx
I've always heard that standard poodles are very smart...love the pic of the older woman too. And her scorpion necklace.
Oh i just got my first black toy poodle this year and he, Rupert is so sweet and polite and not at all hoity toity. We take him every where even i put him down my jacket on the back of my boyfriends motorcycle.
I love this post. ALL the pictures are amazing! thank you

What a great post. Love those poodles and the people too
;)
FOUR paws up for this post
to the people who don't like poodles: how much time have you actually spent in the presence of a standard poodle? everyone i have ever met who is acquainted with a standard poodle is a lifelong fan. given, a toy poodle is usually a one-person-dog, and his intention is not to impress you, but to please his owner--a goal he takes very seriously and excels at.
Some of these (3 to be exact) are not poodles but maltese dogs.
