Veruschka - February 1969
I was given this UK Vogue cover for my Birthday, I was born in January 1969. There was some confusion over which cover was my actual Birthday one as this Veruschka cover was also used for US Vogue in November 1968. I'm glad it's this one as think this is a brilliant cover - Veruschka looks amazing, Irving Penn is a genius and I love the jewellery and the make-up, especially the blue eyeshadow.
I recently had to do some research on magazine covers and looked at every single Vogue cover on record. Here are some of my favourites. I've picked them for a variety of reasons - the model, the photography, the colours, the stunning hats, jewellery, the fabulously over the top styling (although US Vogue especially can often too pink and girly for my taste - although I've included a few) and the wonderful Sixties hair and make-up. The UK Vogue's have to be my favourites, there's something I love in all of these covers.

Maudie James in Vogue December 1969 - I love this. I'm sure this is what I've modelled my make-up on for my entire life and never updated it.
As per usual I got carried away, although I could have posted a lot more.

Which ones are your favourites? xxx

so many gorgeous photos here, I love Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy and Britt (moi) the best.. but so fabulous.. you would not look out of place in your green feather gear from yesterday either LOL xx
Wonderful. I love the expressions that have been caught in some of their faces, especially the David Bailey pics. It's good to see pictures of beautiful faces that haven't been digitally smoothed over either. Sophia Loren's eyebrows are incredible, aren't they?!
Love seeing Lauren Hutton trying to look mainstream. She always looks to me like she just wants to break free. The eyelashes and heavy brows are what really surprise me. All about the big eyes. Also fun to think DV behind it all. What fun!
Thanks so much!
Dear Christina,
wow, what a feast of pics!
I personally think 60s Vogue covers piddle all over the airbrushed ones of today.
Thanks for making the effort of posting all these magnificent pictures, a real treat!
Take care luv,
Jem

Twiggy '67.
Iconic.
The eyes were so important then, weren't they?
How utterly beautiful are these women? And their hair!!!
I love Verushka. She was a veritable Goddess.
I love all the jewels and makeup too.
I know I'll sound like an old bag, but the covers these days don't cut it compared to these ones.
I know I'm biased, but the UK ones are just so vastly superior.
I never realised how amazing Pattie's eye make-up is in that penultimate one either. I'm sure I've looked at it a million times and not noticed the incredible artwork going on there!
xx
WOW Christina, that is my kind of research project! I couldn't possibly choose a favourite, these are all amazing. I was wondering about this recently actually - do you know if there is somewhere online that has a record of all the covers to look at? If not I am going to start saving every one I see so I can have my own chronological album. Might do the same with Harpers too. xx
ps - it wasn't a proper turban at all, I just wrapped a skirt round my head like a bath towel and safety pinned the back! I reckon you could get a length of sequined fabric and do the same in a snap. I do, however, have a few black pillbox 'An Education' type vintage hats that I am stalking on ebay for you x
Oh my, what an amazing selection I can see why you would find it had to stop. I was going to list my favourites then realised there just to many. Thank You. Xxxx
Impressive selection. If the Bible were to be re-written today, Vogue would with absolute certainty be in it.
Although born in '69 too, I'm favouring 1965. Wilhelmina - Dec '65 is absolutely timeless. But my favourite is Marika Greene - Sep '65. Stunning.
all are great, I love those Lesley Jones freckles, Celia Hammond Oct 68,David Bailey and Gayle Hunnicut-June 1968-love the David Bailey photograph. pgt
I am really struck by Lesley Jones. Mia Farrow's eyes are beautiful, and Lauren Hutton looks nothing like I think of her.
i adore all the old Vogue covers, you can never go wrong with one framed on your wall!

Gorgeous. Love Pattie Boyd.
WOW - so many fabulous examples. I must say that Jean Shrimpton was possibly my favorite model of that era although her covers here are not my favorites. That Sophia Loren one is so beautifully styled and photographed as is the Sue Murray - both fabulous David Bailey shots!
Hi my dear-what a stunning variety of covers, I must say I'm loving the UK covers best too, but they all just look so glamorous and gorgeous! I love Veruschkas jewellery on your birthday cover, the armwear is amazing!!
How gorgeous! My birthday of December 1966 with Celia Hammond wrapped in foil made me laugh. Maybe that explains my lust for covering myself in silver jewellery?
My favorites areMarch 1965 for the psychedelic headscarf and July 1967 for Twiggy and her painted-on flower. xxx
Wonderful - forgotten how amazing great make up, good lighting and a proper camera takes a fabulous photo - a craft much lost.
Love the selection and one of the Lesley Jone cover is utterly perfect ref all above.
Love Hutton et al and Celia Hammond is one fo my all time fav models.
xx
They are all fabulous it's hard to choose, Jean Shrimpton is my favourite model of the sixties so I love her covers but syling wise I love the Marika Greene cover. Can't wait for part two, the seventies as I will remember some of those. It's amazing how Vogue covers leave an imprint on your mind forever.
XXX
Fantastic Christina - thank you for these.
I'm a bit older than you and remember seeing some of these covers as a child (even in Finland).I love Patty Boyd's eyes in Oct '69, Mia Farrow with her (then) shockingly short hair in '67 and the hat, the colours and styling of the April '66 cover. And who couldn't be taken by Faye Dunaway in May 1968.
Helena xx
hi there, hope you are well. those covers are just fab!! i just love looking at all the old vogue covers!! e xx
The Celia Hammond foil cover is bananas! I wish Vogue had covers that interesting nowadays. Thanks to this blog I now know who Lesley Jones is. Absolutely stunning.
How on earth am I meant to pick a favourite from all of those?! It's curious how some of the covers look so modern and yet some are incredibly dated now. I do really like the Lesley Jones December 68 cover (freckles!) and Sophia Loren is as amazingly beautiful as ever. Perhaps it's the Veruschka one - all that wonderful jewellery as well as such a stunning face.
I find the Lauren Hutton ones oddly hard to look at. Her eyes look wrong somehow...
I like Britt. They are all pretty wonderful though.
Love you.
This is a lovely post!! now I want that snake bracelet in the first cover, gorgeous!
xoxo

Oh what fun! Very hard to pick favorites. I loved the freckles, but here are my three favorites:
Lauren Hutton January 68 (I recognize her and the others' comments have been interesting).
Jean Shrimpton January 65
Samantha Jones March 67
Sophia Loren and Jean Shrimpton
What a treat! I love so many of them, it's hard to choose! One of my favs is March 65, and October 67. Wow. They inspire me to illustrate!
such a feast for my eyes!!
my 3 favourites:
Lauren (me!) Hutton, Jan 68
Sophia Loren, July 65
Celia Hammond,Oct 67
oh and one more, Britt Ekland, Sep 69!
they're all gorgeous women
hi christina just feasted on all your blogs in the past two weeks wow what a time youve had !! ive just read over 500 postings which were waiting for me om my return from London great fun
tooooo many fabulous things thankyouuuuuu
Ill start again tomorrow love Fay xx
To whomever said 1960s covers weren't airbrushed:
1. Airbrushing is the wrong term. Dodging and burning is the process that smooths out skin tones.
2. 1960s dodge & burned faces just as they do, only they did it in the dark room whereas now it's all done in Photoshop. Like it or not, no one's skin complexion is that flawless.
Hi, thanks for using my scans on your blog, would have been nice if you could credit where they came from though, the magazines are all my own and were scanned by myself. This all takes time and when people pinch other people's hard work, it's a bit annoying, as I'm sure you can imagine, being a fellow blogger who also puts much time and effort into their work.
Love your blog though!
