Friday quotes - Marlene Dietrich

"I dress for the image.
Not for myself, not for the public,
not for fashion, not for men"

Marlene Dietrich
(1901-1992)

Hollywood legend Marlene Dietrich was born in Germany in 1901.  During the 1920's she acted in silent films in Berlin before her role in The Blue Angel brought her international fame and a Hollywood contract with Paramount.  Marketed as Germany's answer to Greta Garbo she became one of our most famous and iconic stars.

Dietrich married once but her love life was legendary.  She had numerous high profile romances with men and women including Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Joseph P. Kenndy, JFK, Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power, Leslie Howard, George Raft, Ernest Hemingway, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, James Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner, Edith Piaf, Greta Garbo, Claudette Colbert and Dolores Del Rio.  Quite a list!

After making over fifty films she toured the world as a show performer from the Fifties to the Seventies and in 1997 was named the ninth greatest star of all time.

Marlene Dietrich quotes

I'll never forget when someone listed a Schiaparelli coat identical to one Marlene wore in Shanghai Express on eBay. I coveted it so badly.

An amazing lady, thank you for all the gorgeous images xx

I was about to sign off and spotted your post - Yippee!! How beautiful she was, I love the leopard print dress and the silk shirt and men's pants, and just all the boudoir style, feathers, zebra, mirrored furniture. Also I think Christina that you could do a mean Marlene - very similar cheekbones, but don't do that with your eyebrows. Have a great weekend xx

I adore the quote about quotations.

The variety in those photos is just beautiful. I always thought of her as having a fairly set look but there's so much softness in some of them.

Christina - a fascinating woman, and what a life she lived. Your post has given insight into what was, for me, just another name on a list of 30s and 40s screen goddesses. I especially liked her more candid and soft-lit pics. I wonder, was the make-up artist/actress as accomplices in crime quote partially inspired by what they did to her eyebrows?

Her eyebrows deserve their own agent.

Great post and fantastic collection of pix. I really must try harder to come up with something original to comment!!!

I hummed Marlene's falling in Love Again when I read this. Hasn't her home decor aged well? Love the mirrored table and zebra rug. x

It never escapes me that women love Dietrich because she was so powerful and masculine-full of gravitas, just look at her next to gorgeous Gary Cooper- with his delicate looks and her own "uniqueness". She had to drive both the men and women wild and still she does. She crossed gender all round- and it must have been great fun dressing and crossing for many reasons.
