My favourite photographers - Paolo Roversi

Photography by Paolo Roversi
Natalia Vodianova

I love the work of Italian photographer Paolo Roversi.  His darkly romantic, beautiful and ethereal portraits are some of my favourites ever.  I think his pictures are like works of art.

Since 1980 he has worked primarily on an 8x10 Deardoff and 8x10 Polaroid camera.  I love his use of light and dark and the timeless quality of his pictures.  He is a photographer who understands that fashion is about nostalgia as well as novelty.

I'm having a fashion and art renaissance again.  I never tire of Paolo's images or the fabulous work of John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood.  I love to see history influencing contemporary fashion.  I like minimalism but have never pulled it off with much success, I'd much rather dress like this!

"To succeed, you must combine the light of the past
with the light of the future"

Paolo Roversi

Isn't he wonderful?   And what brilliant styling!  I found it hard to narrow down my choices as he's done so much amazing stuff.  I've been working so only have time for blogging in the evening.  Luckily I know most models by sight (there's a couple I don't recognise, if you do please let me know) and thankfully you can now upload multiple pictures on Blogger which saves lots of time.  Of course I got carried away.

Seeing these pictures makes me want to dig out all my most over the top clothes and costume jewellery and dress up outrageously.  Nothing new there then!

An amazing body of work, thank you for a true eye-candy of a post. I love this kind of pseudo-Edwardian feel right now... xx

Christina, you're really spoiling us with posts like this. Like Miss Peelpants says, it's eye-candy of the highest order. I love the sense of age and grandeur in so many of the photos.

ps - if you ever feel like doing a post on Sasha Pivovarova I, for one, would absolutely love to read it. What an amazing face.

I hadn't even heard of him before so thank you Christina. Tehse all look like something from a grand, dark opera. Evil queens and slave girls and tragic heriones and Salome dancing with her veils. Love them xx

utterly sublime but it's made me cry...homonally challenged?? pictures from the past making me feel ludicrously nostalgic....

What is it about Italians? They could make a pig look sexy, I swear...(not that any of these ladies and gentlemen are anything but lovely!) xx

I love this Christina, thanks for posting them all. My favourites are the Lara Stone pictures, they look like stills from a ballet.

Wow, I have a lot of things I want to say! :) First, I LOVE LOVE that you always put so many pictures! Most of the blogs (including mine, I have to admit) don't, we stick to 3-5 , hm I don't exactly know why , but maybe cuz it's a pain uploading them all! :P HA!
Second, I'm gonna prove myself ignorant but I didn't know of Paolo Roversi until now.
Suvi looks like an Ice Queen from Narnia, brilliant! I always loved Sasha , but I think I have just stepped into a new level after that picture of her in the woods! I adore Kori Richardson shoot, she looks like Madonna and Farah Fawcett mix... John Galliano portrait is MEGA! 'Nuff said I do know who Paolo Roversi is now! :)
Christina, you put so much effort and research into your blogposts, I love them, that's what makes it special! Never stop writing! :)

I love all the images you chose- seriously, I might have to come back and admire a couple of more times.
I, too, appreciate how much you put into your blog posts.

Thanks!

He truly is one of the greats. I can see your conundrum where do you draw the line in such an impressive body of work. And he has photographed John Galliano who is one of my all time favourite designers both for his awe inspiring design and his own personal style. Xxxx

Psst: Mert & Marcus are shooting Gisele today for a cover shoot with Beladora jewelry. Whoo Hoo!

I loved the Swinton/Casati shoot. You always have the best images!

I was at a friend's house when Lily Cole arrived to collect her mother and take her home. It was almost midnight and she apologised that the shoot had taken rather a long time. Since her elfin face was still painted an ethereal green I said, 'It wasn't with Paolo Reversi by any chance?' Spot on. Not bad for an oldie, eh.
