Friday quotes - Marilyn Monroe

Photography by Richard Avedon

"Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss
and fifty cents for your soul"

Marilyn Monroe
(1926-1962)

Marilyn Monroe was the ultimate Hollywood starlet and legend.  Probably the most instantly recognisable female icon in the world.

I wonder what she'd have been like had she lived?  I like to there's something special about a star who burns so brightly for such a short time, rather than it being tragic.  Here are some of my favourite Marilyn quotes.

"Dreaming about being an actress
is more exciting than being one"

"I have too many fantasies to be a housewife.
I guess I am a fantasy"

"I'm very definitely a woman
and I enjoy it"

"If you can make a girl laugh,
you can make her do anything"

"Sex is a part of nature.
I go along with nature"

"It's not true I had nothing on,
I had the radio on"

Photography by Bert Stern

"What do I wear in bed?
Why, Chanel No. 5 of course"

"If I'm a star
then the people made me a star"

"I knew I belonged to the public and to the world,
not because I was talented or even beautiful,
but because I'd never belonged to anything or anyone else"

"My work is the only ground I've ever had to stand on.
I seem to have a whole superstructure with no foundation
but I'm working on the foundation"

"I am good, but not an angel.
I do sin, but I am not the devil.
I am just a small girl in a big world
trying to find someone to love"

"It's better to be unhappy alone than unhappy with someone"

"A career is wonderful,
but you can't curl up with it on a cold night"

"I don't mind living in a man's world
as long as I can be a woman in it"

"I don't know who invented high heels,
but all women owe him a lot"

"Give a girl the right shoes,
and she can conquer the world"

"Who said nights were for sleep?"

"I want to grow old without facelifts.
I want to have the courage to be loyal to the face I have made"

"I've been on a calendar,
but I've never been on time"

"I make mistakes, I'm out of control and at times hard to handle.
But if you can't handle me at my worst
then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best"

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius
and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous
than absolutely boring"

"We should all start to live before we get too old.
Fear is stupid.  So are regrets"

"I'm not interested in money.
I just want to be wonderful"

No comment - of mine at least - would never ever be enough to say how great this post is and how beautiful and special Marilyn was and HOW TRUE WERE HER WORDS when she said ...50 cents for your soul!

Oh, I just loved reading this....great quotes and beautiful photos....some very astute observations too.

I guess everyone thinks they know Marilyn Monroe but I think there was much more to her than we really knew, one of those girls who was smarter than she liked to let on. Lots of things we'll never know about her now...but she never should have got mixed up with those Kennedys.

Have you read a good biography of her, any recommendations?

"Some Like It Hot" is such a great film, I loved her in that.

Have a lovely week-end! xx

Fabulous Christina, I often wonder what she would have been like had she lived too, I must have all the biographies ever written on her except Fragments which is on the list.

Your home looks wonderfully glamorous and cosy, so glad you have got into the Christmas spirit.

It's been snowing here since Midday, looks gorgeous but very cold, just venturing out to walk Crusoe and to get shopping, thank God for 4X4's we really need them here. Off to Provence for Christmas on Sunday returning the day after Boxing day, (they don't have Boxing day in France it's just a British thing). Then have friends staying, hoping for a lazy, boozy, cosy time with loads of good films and chocolate. Presetting DVD recorder for Mrs Jones on This Morning and first episode of Upstairs Downstairs.

Hope you have a fabulous and gorgeous weekend.

Lots of love and hugs.

Ah Tina, What a lovely post, I agree with all her sayings other than you cant cuddle up to your career at nights to keep you warm. A career alone will keep you warm and will enable oneself to big some big fuck off blankets.
Cant wait to see you,
Love you loads

What a woman!

For ages I wore my Chanel No 5 to bed, but coupled mine with very large pjs and bed socks. Which is a look that I couldn't pull off with aplomb. Although MM could have nailed it.

*sigh* tomorrow I think I might pretend to be Marilyn all day. *plugs in the Carmen heated rollers*

fabulous post! :-D

Dear Christina,

Until today, I have never properly appreciated Marilyn Monroe. Your post is a gift. Her quotes were so filled with hope and wistfulness, how tragic so was so vulnerable and kind to those who treated her so badly.

On another note, would you please e-mail me at tishjett@yahoo.com -- I have a proposition for you.

Merci par avance. Have a lovely weekend and thank you for including. It's a pleasure and an honor.

Warmest regards,
Tish

Poor girl. She was such a one of a kind beauty, and there are some great quotes here. "I want to grow old without facelifts. I want to have the courage to be loyal to the face I have made" is particularly poignant.

I also like:

"Dreaming about being an actress, is more exciting than being one"

Goes for any career or lifestyle, really. It is always much more fun looking in, because you can edit out the boring bits.

I hadn't seen some of these pictures, so thank you. Now, back to my DVD, which I am only halfway through watching but got distracted by blogs! xx

Ooh I am sitting here with my morning cuppa and thinking I will channel MM all day - I am supposed to be going to a glam party tonight but since it is snowing goose feathers outside and the party is 60 miles away across the Pennines, then I doubt if I will get there. It's a great post, thank you for starting my weekend in such a gorgeous way x

I love the photo with her eyes shut! And agree with her philosophy!

I cracked up at your peach background realisation btw. Hahaha! I did wonder. :) xx

I know she didn't exactly have the easiest of lives but I can't think of her as tragic. Too full of joie de vivre (hope I've spelled that right!)

I absolutely love the "But if you can't handle me at my worst
then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best" quote. Now to find a man who lives up to it!

I love the photos of the young Marilyn on the beach .. she was just so lovely xx

She looks so beautiful in white. Black is too heavy for her, so she needs white to bring out the child-like angelic quality which she has. Like sexy without the sex.

great collection of photos and well composed within her quotes!

her life was tragic... ultimately, she felt so alone and was hardly taken seriously. she was typecast by the movie studios as the aloof ditz people perceive her as. however, her words prove she had much more depth and how in-touch she was.

for those looking for more on an inside look, rent Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, or most any other movie with her and watch the "special features". most of those have interviews with her fellow Hollywood legends or a mini-bio. even other classics like Macao, starring Jane Russell and Robert Mitchum has an interview with them both where MM is brought up. there's a number of DVDs to watch about her along with the list of book titles :)

Marilyn monroe is one of the most epic and brilliant personality that I've known in my life. I'm quite fascinated with her wisdom. In fact, I've collected some of the best Marilyn Monroe quotes and make sure to cover at least most of it. Well, they are really inspirational!
